“Get ready for 500 murders”

HOUSTON, Texas – The head of HPD, Art Acevedo, made a proclamation in the city of Houston on Tuesday: “Get ready for 500 murders,” Acevedo said during an afternoon press conference at HPD headquarters.

Acevedo, admitting his strategy to fight homicides in Houston, does not work, resulting in another record year of killings: “Get ready for 500 murders at the rate that is happening.”

When KPRC 2 reminds him that Mario Diaz is investigating that the rise in homicides is taking place under his watch, Acevedo said, “Okay, it’s under my watch, Mario and I will go, and we’ll wear the best head, we carry any head. … but I have a prediction. “Perplexed by his response, Channel 2 Investiga asked Acevedo,” But Miami says he’s the best boss? “The question was the result of the Miami mayor’s statement , Francis Suarez, Monday: “I think this is like getting police chiefs to Tom Brady or Michael Jordan.”

Acevedo’s answer?

“You know Mario, I’m done with you. Actually, I’ve been done with yours all my life. Thank God.”

Acevedo did not want to address difficult issues about the homicides fired during his tenure. Houston has seen a meteoric rise of more than 500 since early 2020, and some are wondering if Acevedo’s exit to the much smaller city of Miami is simply a cut and headed.

“Let me tell you something. In the first place, the fight against crime is not the problem, ”said Acevedo.

Acevedo then blamed the revolving door of the Harris County courthouse for nearly two minutes, blaming the homicide judges, saying they didn’t work hard enough and put the criminals back on the street.

That said, there are two highlights of Acevedo’s tenure. They are the shootings of Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas by HPD in the deadly raid on Harding Street.

When asked what will be the challenge for Acevedo to leave Houston knowing that Harding Street is still unfinished? Acevedo said, “I’ll go back to Harding Street because it happened to me on the clock.”
