LOS ANGELES (AP) – Lucasfilm says Gina Carano is no longer part of the cast of “The Mandalorian” after many online users called for a post on social media comparing the experience of Jews during the Holocaust with the US political climate.
A spokesman for the producer said Wednesday in a statement that Carano is not currently working at Lucasfilm, “he does not plan to be in the future.”
“However, his posts on social media that denigrate people based on their cultural and religious identity are unpleasant and unacceptable,” the statement said.
Carano fell under heavy criticism after publishing that “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers, but by their neighbors … even by children.”
The actor went on to say, “Since the story is being edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily group thousands of Jews, the government made the their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is it different from hating someone for their political views? “
Carano, who played the recurring character Cara Dune in the “Star Wars” series, suppressed the post, but it was widely shared online and pushed the #FireGinaCarano tag into the trend. His character appeared in several episodes of the second season of “The Mandalorian”, a series about a bounty hunter and his quest to unite a powerful and young user of strength with a Jedi knight.
Dune, who in the second season is an advocate for a frontier planet, is often associated with the title character to fight an old enemy: the remnants of the evil Galactic Empire.
Carano, a former mixed martial artist whose character Dune used a mixture of heavy weapons and his fists on top opponents, had been criticized for posts on social media mocking the mask during the pandemic and allegedly defrauding the voters during the 2020 presidential election. He also mocked the use of gender pronouns, listing “beep / bop / boop” in his biography on social media.
