Hawley’s setback comes when he faces fierce criticism for his actions on Jan. 6 – including petitions for him to resign or be expelled from the Senate – after he and Cruz led the challenges against the election results of Pennsylvania and Arizona, respectively.

Hawley has denounced the violence after the riots violated the Capitol and killed five people, but has upheld his decision to try to challenge President Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania. Hawley objected after the joint session was resumed after being suspended for hours because riots stormed the building.
Hawley appeared Monday to refer to requests for him to resign, writing in a separate letter to Democratic senators who had “considered whether he should ask to resign or be expelled from the Senate.”
“The first amendment does not give you carte blanche to abuse the Senate ethics process. Today I filed a complaint with the ethics committee detailing the deliberate and partisan abuse of this process, including your apparent coordination with various groups. of dark money, and calls for it to be properly disciplined, ”Hawley wrote.
