With the iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, Apple automatically updates all payment plans from iCloud to iCloud +. If you pay for iCloud storage, you’ll now get access to the private streaming feature and the ability to hide your email address online.

How does the iCloud private relay work?

Let’s be clear about one thing: iCloud Private Relay is not a VPN and will not work for third party applications. What is this? will do protects traffic passing through the Safari browser on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

In a way, the private relay is more secure than a third-party VPN. When you visit a website in Safari, the data is first sent to Apple, which removes all personal identifiers (such as your IP address). Jot is then sent to a secondary server (managed by a third party), where you are assigned a new one, temporary IP address to be used on the website you are visiting. That stops ad trackers and personal data collection cookies.

Apple uses this process in two steps to ensure no single entity (neither Apple nor the third-party server) can track you. Apple only knows your IP address and the third party only knows the website you are visitingyoung, so neither gets the full picture. This is usually a risk using an unreliable system VPN.

In terms of usability, the private relay does not behave like a VPN. For example, there is no option to select your location; Apple will continue to use the server closest to your country. You can switch to “Maintain overall location” mode to provide any location around in your area, without giving details. This means you will not be able to use the private relay to watch Netflix from another country or unlock geo-restricted websites in your region.
