A California judge has certified a class action lawsuit against Apple for the damage-prone butterfly keyboard design included in the MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models made between 2015 and 2019. The case alleges that Apple knowingly sold the fragile keyboards despite numerous complaints and requests for broken and unresponsive keyboards, and while you still can’t join the lawsuit, you can do so right now to help build the case against the company.
According to the MacBook Pro Keyboard Litigation website, the class action lawsuit covers “all people who bought, except for resale, in California, New York, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington or Michigan, an Apple MacBook from any of the 2015 model years -2017, an Apple MacBook Pro from any of the 2016-2019 model years (except 16 [inch] MacBook Pro released in November 2019) or an Apple MacBook Air from any of the 2018-2019 model years ”.
The legal team is seeking nationwide certification, which extends collective action to include all U.S. customers who purchased one of the MacBook models listed on demand. This is good news for MacBook or MacBook Pro owners who have had issues with faulty Butterfly keyboards, but it’s important to keep in mind that this decision simply means that demand can move forward. The judge has not ruled in any way, nor is there any agreement or solution yet.
That said, if you have issues with the butterfly keyboard, you can send your comments via a survey on the website. The survey is open to all U.S. customers who have purchased a MacBook or MacBook Pro, even if you are not specifically covered by the class action lawsuit. You can fill out a single form if you’ve purchased multiple MacBooks or MacBook Pros and don’t need to provide any proof of purchase (although the questionnaire asks if you have one).
Please note that completing the survey does not mean that you are part of the class action lawsuit or that you are represented by Girard Sharp’s attorneys, nor do you pre-qualify for any compensation based on the outcome of the lawsuit. However, filling out the form can help bolster the case against Apple and its faulty butterfly keyboard and help expand collective action to include more customers.
