State Attorney J. Hanley in Winnebago County, Illinois, identified the victims as Thomas Furseth, 65, Jerome Woodfork, 69, and Dennis Steinhoff, 73.
The gunman was identified as Duke Webb, 37, charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder. He was denied bail on Monday.
Webb admitted Saturday the thirteenth and directed officers to the locations of the firearm he used in the incident, Hanley said.
Police believe the shooting was a random attack, Rockford police chief Daniel O’Shea said.
Webb, who is part of the military, will be evaluated for PTSD, according to his lawyer Elizabeth Bucko.
The victims were shot on the first and second floors
Rockford police received a call from an active shooter Saturday around 6:55 p.m. in Don Carter Lanes, according to the charge document. The business contains a bowling alley on the first floor and a bar on the second floor, according to a press release from Hanley’s office.
Upon arrival, officers learned that several people had been shot. A 16-year-old girl was shot in the shoulder while sitting at a table with three other teenagers. A 14-year-old boy was shot in the face and is currently in critical condition, according to court documents.
Furseth was on the first floor when the shooting began; he started running up the stairs when he was shot in the torso. He reached the second floor before falling. He was pronounced dead when officers arrived, according to the statement.
Webb went up to the apartment where there were between 20 and 25 people in the bar, according to the statement. According to the statement, he “fired several shots” at the bar’s patrons, including Steinhoff and Woodfork.
Steinhoff was shot in the torso and his body was found on the balcony outside the bar.
Woodfork’s body was found in the parking lot below the balcony. A witness told officers who saw him fall from the balcony. Woodfork was dead when officers arrived, according to the statement.
At the bar was also a 62-year-old man who was shot in the thigh, back, groin and left buttocks. He has not been identified and is alive, but is in critical condition, according to the statement.
The shot was captured by video surveillance. Webb directed officers to the firearms he used, according to the statement, which were behind his bag. Officers recovered Glock .40 and a .380-caliber Glock.
Several .40-caliber and .380-caliber carcasses were found at the scene, according to the statement.
Webb was a green beret in the army
The U.S. military confirmed that Webb is a first-class sergeant currently assigned to the 3rd Battalion, the 7th Special Forces Group as an operations assistant and intelligence sergeant. The unit is located at the Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
Webb joined the Army in 2008 and was on leave when the shooting occurred, according to the Army. Webb made four separate tours in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2020, including those from January to July this year.
The Army said in a statement that it will continue to assist the Rockford Police Department in its investigation.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn of this tragic event and our prayers and thoughts are with the families of the dead and wounded,” said Colonel John W. Sannes, commander of the 7th Special Forces Group.
Webb’s commander-in-chief, General John W. Brennan, also issued a statement.
“The alleged actions of Sergeant. 1st Class Duke Webb are abominable and absolutely do not represent the Special Forces Regiment.
