It’s the holiday season. People in Japan buy gifts and the Nintendo Switch will no doubt be a popular gift item. However, it may be a good idea to check these switching units before giving them away.

Nintendo announced that customers in Japan report error code 2162-0002, which prevents them from completing the initial setup of their consoles. If customers in Japan experience this problem, Nintendo will quickly replace the defective units after filling out an online form.

Interestingly, error code 2162-0002 has affected some Switch owners in recent years in one way or another. A Redeemer, for example, recalled in 2017 how a system breakdown occurred and that a spare unit was needed. Other mentions of the bug I saw online have come up after loading it in hand mode or even checking friend requests.

Nintendo of America has a page for this error code, indicating that it is restarted by holding down the power button for three seconds, before selecting Power Options and then Restart.

Kotaku has contacted Nintendo of America for comments on whether there have been similar configuration errors for the new Switchs that have been reported in Japan and will update this article if the company comments.
