Four people died in Italy due to rare blood clots after receiving the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine (AZN.L), a report by the national pharmaceutical agency AIFA reported on Thursday.

The AIFA report said several side effects were observed after 0.5% of the 9.07 million doses administered between December 27 and March 26, with the three vaccines used so far, by Pfizer manufacturers. (PFE.N), AstraZeneca and Moderna (MRNA). O), was reported to cause undesired reactions.

Serious side effects were reported in 0.04% of cases.

Mild side effects have been reported after the use of all three vaccines, according to the AIFA report, which added flu-like symptoms, pain at the injection site and fatigue.

Like many European countries, Italy briefly stopped AstraZeneca inoculations last month when concerns about blood clots arose. It has since taken them back for those 60 or older after EU regulators said the benefits outweighed the risks.

AIFA said there had been 11 cases in Italy of people developing one of two types of blood clots after their AstraZeneca shot: cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) and thrombosis with multiple blood vessels

Four of the 11 died, he said.

AstraZeneca said it “works to understand individual cases and” possible mechanisms that could explain these extremely rare facts. “
