It’s been 14 years since Rockstar posted weird TV ads with just a countdown clock

In 2007, Rockstar Games mocked him Grand Theft Auto IV with a series of nightly ads appearing on channels like FX. All ads were 30 minutes from watching a clock go down, and every second was scored by a shot. Young Zack, always a sucker, fell in love with the hype.

Yes, remember the old days of 2007. Specifically, March 2007. Like March 2021, a lot of people around the world were looking forward to the next big game in the GTA series. However, unlike now, where we have no news or information about the next game, in 2007 we knew that GTA IV would arrive. And Rockstar was happy to push fans back every second until the first trailer dropped.

To be clear, this ad that marks the clock it was not countdown to game release. No, this watch counted in a simple and forceful way every second until the first trailer was released.

And yet Zack, stupid and young, saw a lot of that countdown ad, switching between Adult Swim and the countdown. Because? Because I thought, maybe, just may be, if you saw it, Rockstar would show a teaser for the game before and get a look. It never happened. These ads ran for a few nights, although the exact details about them are hard to find online. Honestly, I’m surprised someone even recorded and hung it on YouTube in 2007.

When the count stopped and the trailer finally dropped, the Rockstar website crashed and people couldn’t even see it immediately. It was a frustrating end to a strange presentation campaign, which we probably won’t see again.
