The comedian posted a video on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon with his longtime boyfriend Randy Bick to make the surprise announcement.
The couple backtracked and let Griffin fans know they were in disguise for more of the holiday.
“Happy new year and surprise,” the couple said. “We’re getting married! Tonight! After midnight!”
“She said yes!” Bick added.
Griffin said the wedding would take place at midnight on the west coast and promised a surprise officer.
He later shared the video of the married couple by the legendary Lily Tomlin.
“The whole ceremony lasted just under 14 minutes, but I have to give you the first 75 seconds without cutting back,” he tweeted to Griffin. “I LIKE IT! We promised you atypical. We’re in love and we can’t stop laughing. Thank you @LilyTomlin and Jane Wagner #HappyNewYear.”
Griffin and Bick have been dating since 2011. He also tweeted a photo from his first official date.
Griffin was previously married to Matthew Moline for five years. They separated in 2005.
