The six-term congressman told The New York Times that 11 members of his family sent him a two-page handwritten note after calling for Trump’s removal from office for the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
“Oh, what a disappointment you have for us and for God!” began the letter.
His writer also accused him of working with the “devil’s army,” which includes Democrats and the “fake media.”
“We thought you were‘ smart ’enough to see how the left was brainwashing many‘ so-called good people ’, including you and many other GOP members,” the letter continued. “You have even fallen in love with his ideals of socialism! So, so sad! ”
The note, obtained by the Times, states that family members were “completely upset” with Kinzinger.
“We are now ashamed that we are related to you,” they wrote. “You have embarrassed the name of the Kinzinger family.”
Kinzinger’s cousin Karen Otto said in an interview with the Times that she paid $ 7 to send it by certified mail to the legislator’s father. He also sent copies to members of the Illinois Congressional delegation.
“I wanted Adam to run away,” Otto told the newspaper.
Kinzinger said family members who sent the letter suffer a “brainwashing” of conservative churches.

The Illinois congressman, who won re-election in the fall after voting against previous Democrats’ efforts to oust Trump in late 2019, now faces a primary challenge from the Republican Party and resistance from state party officials who have remained loyal to the former president.
The Republican Central Committee of La Salle County, located in the district it represents, moved to censor it earlier this month.
“The party is sick right now,” Kinzinger told the Times. “It’s one thing for the party to accept different points of view, but it has become this massive litmus test in everything. So, it’s a possibility on the road, but it’s certainly not my intention, and I’ll fight like hell to save it first. “
