‘Lawyer Melvin Bonilla did not file complaints for death threats’, according to president of the Bar Association

The president of the Honduran Bar Association, Fredy Cerrato, said this Friday that lawyer Melvin Bonilla did not file allegations of threats that put his life at risk.

“We talked a few months ago and he didn’t mention anything about me threats. We are very dismayed, but above all worried that in most cases everything goes unpunished, “Cerrato said.

The legal professional also commented that in the last few hours they have received complaints from death threats of three lawyers.

“However, we have not had a response from the authorities even though we have already made the corresponding request. We are extremely concerned to see that we do not have a positive response from the state in the face of a guild that continues to grieve.”

According to the National Violence Observatory, 11 lawyers lost their lives violently in 2020.

“The big problem is the impunity“This element puts us at greater risk, because if those responsible are caught and punished according to the law, a deterrent action is created, otherwise they are given an open letter.”

For her part, the criminal lawyer Gràcia Maria Beltrand, has detailed that in 60% of cases the causes of this type of death are due to the secrecy of confidentiality as part of the profession.

Meanwhile, 20% are circumstances related to their work as sources or prosecutors.
