Mario Kart 8 becomes the best-selling racing game in U.S. history

Mario Kart 8

The eighth entry in the Mario Kart series has finally surpassed sales of Mario Kart Wii in the United States to be crowned the “best-selling” racing game in that country.

This information comes from Mat Piscatella of the NPD group. According to IGN, this includes “combined” sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the original Mario Kart 8 Wii U game.

Mat also points out how the latest entry in the Mario Kart series appeared on the best-seller chart last month:

“US NPD SW: Mario Kart 8 ranked 6th in the March 2021. best-selling chart. Mario Kart 8 is the best-selling racing genre video game in U.S. history.”

Nintendo sales data (as of December 31, 2020) reveals that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 33.41 million units worldwide and is the best-selling Switch game. The original Wii U, as of September 20, 2020, has sold 8.45 million copies.

These combined sales (41.86 million) obviously exceed Mario Kart Wii sales for life, but individually, the Wii game is still technically ahead globally, with 37.38 million units sold.
