It’s almost a guarantee for a superhero movie or for any highly successful franchise marketable these days: new movie in the series, new costume for the hero. Aquaman and the lost kingdom is no exceptionand we saw the new dress in action.
Revealed by the returning director, James Wan and star Jason Momoa on the weekend, next to the golden orange and navy green dress from the first film—adapting Aquaman ‘The iconic comic book costume—In the sequel, Arthur will also wear a “Stealth” version of his outfit, which changes the original to bright colors with a dark color palette, accentuated by a silver armor padding along the arms and thighs and a much more elegant profile.
Wan describes the new suit, designed by David Leslie Johnson, as “Atlantis – based technology [a] the camouflage ability of the cephalopod ”, and inspired by a suit of similar tones that Aquaman wore to the comics, the blue camouflage introduced to Neal Pozner and Craig Hamiltonfrom the 1986 miniseries. But an interesting evolution of the design apart from the coloring is the torso, which is … well, chiseled so that it is meant to reflect Arthur’s own body, but it’s actually just a suit of sealed bones on top of the actual abs.
There is no doubt that Jason Momoa, of course, has all the physique under all this costume: us I’ve seen enough of that in the first film as well, but there’s something deliciously retro and cheesy in the pure fact import of sculpted musculature in the new suit compared to the costume in the first film for Arthur. Throw in the darker color palette and it really feels like a throwback to the superhero movie 90s costume troops, with more than one small camp launched for good measure. And really, if there will be a DC sequel with some retro cheese? It will be what the film follows with Pitbull taking over Toto, right?
