Octavia Spencer has apologized for a comment she made on Britney Spears’ Instagram post announcing her engagement to fiancé Sam Asghari, saying her intention was to “make them laugh.”
Earlier this week, Spears posted a video on her disabled Instagram page since then announcing that she and her lifelong boyfriend Asghari are planning to make the knot.
Spencer joked in comments that Spears should get Asghari to sign a prenuptial agreement. Given that Spears has been in a long-standing struggle to gain control of his own finances and break free from a 13-year-old conservatory, the statement went viral.
On Wednesday, Spencer posted on his own Instagram to clarify his initial comment.
“Everyone, a few days ago Sam and Britney announced their engagement and I, being me, made a joke,” he said in the title of a happy photograph of Spears and Asghari. “My intention was to make them laugh and not cause pain. I contacted this lovely couple in private to apologize and now I want to restore just a little bit of happiness that they stole. Britney fans have seen her with a lot of pain and she has found happiness. We are delighted with her. So let’s show them love. “
He has also tagged his post #nonnegativity.
Asghari was a good sport on the whole issue and commented on Spencer’s post, saying he was “very kind to clarify”, but there is “no kind of hard feeling”.
“Jokes and misconceptions come with territory,” he wrote, along with some supporting emojis.
