Petula Clark was surprised that ‘Downtown’ touched down before the bombing

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) – Singer Petula Clark expressed shock and disbelief that her 1964 hit “Downtown” was aired just minutes before a bomb detonated in Nashville on Christmas morning.

“I was told that the background music for this weird ad was me singing‘ Downtown. ’Of all the thousands of songs, why this one?” Clark wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday.

Clark said he loved Nashville and wished he could hug everyone in town.

The blast took place in the heart of downtown Nashville. The blast killed the bomber, injured several people and damaged dozens of buildings. The RV sounded a warning that a bomb would detonate in 15 minutes and then switched to a “Downtown” recording before the explosion.

“(Millions) of people around the world have been lifted by this cheerful song,” Clark wrote. “Maybe you can read something more in those words, depending on your mood. It’s possible.”
