Wuhan, China, which was the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, saw a crowd of people full of people again on Thursday afternoon, a scene that made a stark contrast to other parts of the world holding smaller celebrations due to of the virus.
Thousands of people were seen crowding into the city, where just a year ago the outbreak of COVID-19 was first reported. It was reported that people were heading to the clubs and celebrating by releasing balloons.
Still, the photos showed crowds still wearing masks.
As of Sunday, Wuhan had reported a total of 50,354 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission.
Although the city has largely recovered from the coronavirus pandemic, a recent study published this week found that case counts were probably higher than initially reported.
It is possible that up to half a million residents of the Chinese city have been infected with the virus, about ten times more than the initial number of confirmed cases.
In the United States, December was the deadliest month of the pandemic, with more than 63,000 deaths to date. April was once the deadliest month of the pandemic, with more than 55,000 dead.
State officials urged Americans to avoid large gatherings on New Year’s Eve as the virus continues to spread. The annual New York City celebration was held in Times Square, but with a new format, which included virtual appearances and smaller crowds.
The New York images contrast with Wuhan, but the celebration was still full of celebrity appearances and musical performances.
The photos show a quieter Time’s Square, with those who were around with masks and social distancing.
