Legendary French fashion designer and licensee Pierre Cardin has died at the age of 98.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Cardin name was engraved on thousands of products, including watches and sheets, and was sold to more than 100,000 stores worldwide.
Cardin was known for popularizing the Space Age style that became commonplace in the 1960s.
The French Academy of Fine Arts announced Cardin’s death in a tweet Tuesday. It did not specify when the designer died or its cause.
“Fashion is always ridiculous, seen from before or after. But for now, it’s wonderful, ”Cardin said in a 1970 interview on French television.
With André Courrèges and Paco Rabanne, Cardin specialized in “sharp shapes” and graphic patterns from the 1950s onwards. He was known for spandex dresses with plastic hoops, bubble suits and bucket hats that covered the entire head of a model.
However, the look of the brand remained largely unchanged over the years, leading to a decline in sales.
Born in Italy in 1922, Cardin moved to France during his childhood and became an apprentice tailor at the age of 14.
He worked as an assistant in Paquin’s house, and also worked with Jean Cocteau, Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior.
