We all know and love Polaroid for its analog cameras and 90s nostalgia, but the new Polaroid Now + takes things to a whole new level. This camera is the highest tech option of the brand so far and after a week of testing we can confirm that it is quite exceptional for an analog camera.
Combining it with the Polaroid app, the Now + offers a lot of creativity. Whether you’re a professional photographer or want to take fun photos with your friends, Polaroid Now + is a fun, high-tech film camera that’s worth it.
A fun, high-tech camera
The Polaroid Now + is a high-tech twist on the classic instant camera that gives you lots of fun application-based options for customizing your photos.
Who is it for: Polaroid Now + is ideal for both beginners and advanced photographers. Whether you’re just starting out playing with analog or movie cameras or you’re an experienced professional, it’s a great option for taking fun photos with friends or creating dreamy artistic images.
What you need to know: The $ 149 price seems high, but controlling the smartphone app makes the camera worthwhile. Now + includes almost everything you need to get started. You’ll get a micro USB charging cable, a lens filter kit, and of course the camera itself. The downside is that the Now + uses Polaroid’s i-Type color film and you’ll have to buy it separately (like this 16-sheet pack for $ 29.99). Overall, the camera was easy to set up and use and the app allowed for a lot of control over the device.
How to compare: The Ara + has two new features: aperture priority and tripod mode. It differs from the rest of the Polaroid range with smartphone-based controls, something you won’t find on comparable cameras. The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1 comes in at $ 119, but it has no application control or features like double exposure or light painting. The previous model, the Polaroid Now, is priced at $ 99.99, and while you still have creative and useful features such as dual exposure and autofocus, you won’t get the wide range of options that Now + offers. The Now + reaches the top of the price range, but also with maximum control and capacity.

The Now + works similarly to the ’90s Polaroid camera that kids grew up with (or the Instax for all Gen Z’ers). The camera looks a bit bulky at first, but it never felt uncomfortable or uncomfortable. It comes in three colors, white, black and a cool blue. The design is reminiscent of an old school analog camera that we liked. If you don’t want to take advantage of any of the extended camera features, you can aim, shoot, and wait for your print to develop. When the photo comes out of the film tray, there is a sheet of black plastic that will cover the image so that it is not exposed or damaged. The film will take up to 15 minutes to unfold, but then you will be left with a very stellar plan.
Your photos will never be as clear as they would with a digital camera, but we found that photos taken in both standard mode and portrait mode were clear and focused. If you’re shooting in modes like double exposure or playing with the aperture, you’ll need to overcome some trial and error before you end up with a moment you’re happy with. The analog camera gives you the color aesthetic of the film, which tends to have a cooler tone and higher contrast. To shoot at night, you should definitely consider the flash, but shooting indoors with natural lighting provides a smooth and pleasing look to your images.

Loading the movie tray was no difficult task, but there weren’t many instructions to help us. It would have been nice to have a little more guidance, as some additional steps needed to be taken, such as making sure the top exposure sheet is unfolded before you start taking pictures. It’s easy to know which side the film has to face, but it’s not clear which end of the film comes in first. We ended up seeing a small arrow and after the removal process we found out which side came in first. The film fits perfectly and the hinge of the film tray was sturdy and even while playing to make sure it was set up correctly. We didn’t think anything was too fragile or that we were going to break up if we made a mistake.
It didn’t take long to charge the camera (about an hour) and you can check the battery level using the app. We didn’t come across the need to load the Now + often; a load should last you while shooting 15 packets of film. If you use the camera to have fun with your friends, you probably won’t go through as much film, so you’ll go through a handful of uses before uploading. Another plus is that Now + will turn itself off if you haven’t used it a bit. We like the battery saving feature and the ability to check the status of the charge.

Now for the fun stuff! The associated Polaroid app (available for both Android and iPhone) is the biggest addition you get with Now +. Even if you use an analog camera, you get all the benefits of digital photography technology over the phone. The interface of the application is quite intuitive; we found it easy to navigate and having said that, there isn’t much to make it feel complicated or overwhelming. The camera connects to the app via Bluetooth, but you don’t need to take any major steps to connect it. Simply turn on the camera, open the app and it will connect automatically. We really liked the simplicity of the Bluetooth connection and that we didn’t have to add the camera as a device by setting it up or taking any additional measurements.
Swipe for each shooting mode that the camera works with, and at the end, stop on a specific screen, it will leave the camera in that mode. The modes are manual mode, light paint mode, dual exposure mode, aperture priority, and tripod mode. You can also use the app as a remote control for your camera. These modes are great and can earn you some stellar photos if you know how to use them properly. Some modes, such as portrait mode, are definitely easier to use than others. Options like light painting may take a little longer to practice. We had a bit of trouble figuring out how much time we needed to spend before the shot was over.

If you have someone else take your photo with Now +, you will need to set the camera mode using the Polaroid app or the photographer. You can’t switch the mode on the camera itself, but the camera shutter still works. Whether you use the app as a remote control or have someone take a picture of you, setting up the app for shooting is fairly straightforward and its controls are easy enough to communicate with other people involved in your adventures. photographic.
The only complaint we have with the app is the minimal explanation of how it is best set up for each photo. Some of which you’ve probably heard about and can conceptualize. Portrait mode, as an example, is a popular photography style for both iPhone and Android users. You will be instructed on whether the settings were too dark, light, near or far. However, light painting and aperture mode are more familiar terms to people with a little more photographic experience. There are small light bulb icons where you can click to get information about the photo you can create, but it doesn’t provide any help on how to set up your shot or break it down step by step. We would have liked to see a little more of the detailed analysis included in the app.
The lens filters included with Now + don’t add too much to the experience, but they’re definitely fun. They come in four different colors: blue, red, amber, yellow and there is also a prism filter. They fit easily into the lens and can add bright hues to your images, but they weren’t a major selling point for us.
Overall, Now + is easy to set up, although the directions were minimal. We would have liked to see a little more from the detailed step-by-step app for details such as the opening mode or the light paint mode and movie loading. Without these details, it took a little longer than we had hoped to figure it all out.

At $ 149.99, the Polaroid Now + is a great buy if you’re looking for a high-tech analog camera, though you’ll have to buy movies separately. The Polaroid app is very intuitive and adds a lot of value to the camera itself. Having such easy control over the device and being able to access film techniques through an app that definitely breaks it down makes Now + worth the price.
We would have liked to see a little more specific instructions through the app, but we were still impressed and enjoyed with the camera. Lens filters are fun, but they’re not our favorite part of shopping, nor a big selling point for us. Now + is a great gadget if you want to take fun photos with different photography methods.
