Prayer vigil at New York Hospital for rapper DMX

WHITE PLAINS, NY (AP) – Supporters and family of rapper DMX sang his name and offered prayers Monday in front of New York Hospital, where he remained in life support.

The 50-year-old was admitted to hospital on Friday, after a heart attack.

The crowd outside White Plains Hospital said “DMX! DMX! ”And when the speaker urged him, he crossed his arms in an X-shape. The sobs of a woman echoed as the audience listened to a recording of the rapper, whose name was Earl Simmons.

Simmons’ attorney, Murray Richman, said Sunday that the rapper was admitted to the intensive care unit, but was not sure what caused the heart attack.

DMX debuted with rap in 1998 and has released seven albums in a career that has included three Grammy nominations. He also starred in several films.

But substance abuse has been a struggle for him over the years, even in 2019, when he canceled shows to go to a rehab center.

Still, he maintained his position among the fans. Last year, an online showdown with rap partner Snoop Dogg as part of the Verzuz series attracted more than 500,000 viewers.
