LONDON – Samsung on Wednesday unveiled three mid-range smartphones in hopes of attracting people with less money as its competition with Apple intensifies.

The new phones are part of the budget of Samsung’s Galaxy A range, which has become a popular brand among Samsung customers, stopped by the high prices of the firm’s Galaxy S range.

Samsung aims to regain its position as the world’s leading smartphone maker after Apple took that title in the fourth quarter of 2020. Apple’s new iPhone 12 is the company’s first model with capacity 5G.

Samsung is launching three new models: the Galaxy A52, the Galaxy A52 5G and the Galaxy A72. The new lineup is an update to last year’s Galaxy A51 and A71 phones. The A52 5G is the only device of the three that supports super fast 5G internet.

Specifications and functions

The South Korean electronics giant says its new phones include a number of improvements over its predecessors, including a better screen, camera and battery life.

The Galaxy A52 has a 6.5-inch glossy screen, while the Galaxy A72 has a 6.7-inch panel. The Galaxy A52 5G includes a 120Hz refresh rate, which basically means you’ll be able to scroll more smoothly. The Galaxy A52 input and the more expensive A72 models have a 90Hz refresh rate.

Samsung says it takes eye strain into account, including a feature that automatically adjusts the color temperature of the screen based on how a person uses their phone. There’s also a music sharing setting that allows users to sync their phone with a friend’s device to connect to a Bluetooth speaker without having to pair it directly.

All three phones contain a quad camera with a 64-megapixel main lens. The Galaxy A72 has a 3x optical zoom, which according to Samsung will allow users to take a photo at a distance of 10 meters which seems to have been taken at only three meters.

Another key feature of the camera in the new Galaxy A range is the Fun mode, which was developed in collaboration with Snap. It’s a tool from Samsung’s native camera app that lets you add Snapchat filters to your images and videos.

Samsung also offered better battery life with its new phones, promising two days of use without having to worry about charging the phones. The A52 and A52 5G include a 4,500 mAH battery, while the A72 has a larger 5,000 mAH battery.

Price and release date

Samsung’s Galaxy A52 will sell for 349 euros ($ 415), while the A52 5G and A72 will return 429 euros and 449 euros, respectively.

Samsung has not yet given an international release date for the new phones, but said they will be released in the United States sometime in April.

“This new training represents a significant step in performance and features,” Paolo Pescatore, a technology, media and telecommunications analyst at PP Foresight, told CNBC.

“The most prominent features are the impressive screen, which includes a high refresh rate and a much longer battery life.”

Samsung’s new cheap phones could tempt people who aren’t ready to pay $ 1,000 or more for a premium model of Android or iPhone.

“The launch is timely and comes at an interesting time given the large number of launches of new smartphones,” Pescatore said.

“While there is great excitement with the arrival of new smartphones, the competition at the mid-level level is fierce. ) at high prices “.
