Roku is buying TV shows and documentaries from Quibi

Roku announced on Friday that it had acquired the Quibi content library, almost three months after the short-lived video streaming service was shut down.

The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

Roku will make Quibi content available for free with ads for all Roku users, starting this year. In addition to the content that was already aired on Quibi, Roku has the rights to stream more than a dozen unreleased programs from the company. Roku’s own streaming app provides a lot of free content to stream advertising, a growing part of the company’s business outside of selling hardware devices.

Quibi didn’t get much strength when it launched early last year. The company, which closed in October, noted a convergence of factors that led to its failure. Meanwhile, Roku has experienced rapid growth amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The company said it doubled the reach of households year-over-year in its fourth quarter of 2020.
