Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus mingled with dozens of children in a Georgia city. The couple then tested positive for Covid

Now officials in Ludowici, Georgia, have to contend with a disturbing consequence: guests of honor tested positive for Covid-19 after the December 10 event.

“It has now been brought to the attention of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as my office, that after the event, both‘ Santa ’and‘ Mrs. Keys “were tested for the Covid-19 virus and both yielded positive results,” Robert Parker, president of Long County commissioners, said in a press release. “They showed no symptoms at the time of the event.”

After participating in the Long County Chamber of Commerce parade, Santa and Ms. Keys were also at a “well-attended” tree lighting and at an event where an estimated 50 children were photographed with Santa.

In the same statement, Parker offered a mixed message, saying the incident was “a cause for concern” and that he did not “feel that this incident was a cause for panic.” He said his children were part of the beloved number who had been photographed with Santa Claus.

“I know personally both‘ Santa Claus ’and‘ Mrs. Keys “all my life and I can assure everyone that they would never have done anything consciously to endanger any child,” Parker said. “Both have held these roles for many years and bringing joy to children during the holidays is one of the most important parts of their lives.”

Long City commissioners have decided not to cancel any other holiday-themed events for the rest of the season.

Parker says he speaks for the majority of the commission saying they plan to move on with other festive traditions to bring “a certain sense of normalcy” to the pandemic.

CNN has contacted Parker to comment.
