The Senate passed the Senate Resolution on Thursday 1, ordering the Energy and Energy Projects Commission to conduct a thorough investigation into the award of the contract between the Electric Power Authority (EEA) and LUMA Energy, LLC.
“There is an important agenda that involves the whole country. I am not rooting my first resolution against a public policy, the public policy is made by the Legislature. The fact that the Governor has appointed a steering committee does not prevent that the Assembly is investigating. Several sectors have raised their voices saying this contract. I read the contract and raises suspicion. It is not a partisan resolution and it is not against LUMA, the important thing is to have the right information, “he said. author of the measure and president of the Senate, José Luis Dalmau Santiago.
The Resolution in its explanatory memorandum explains that “in the name of ensuring a fair and transparent business for the People of Puerto Rico, we consider it urgent to investigate the award of the contract between the Electricity Authority and LUMA Energy, LLC The Puerto Rican Senate must evaluate the hiring process conducted, the scope of the agreement, its impact on the rights of public corporation workers, as well as its possible effect on the market, and on corporate finance and billing for consumer service. If necessary, the investigation will have to weigh the feasibility and effects of amending or canceling the contract. “
For his part, the senator of the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC), Rafael Bernabe, has indicated that this LUMA contract has even been objected to by people in favor of privatization. “We are in favor of a thorough investigation, and we do our best to revoke this contract. This should be our perspective and goal. We favor this Resolution as part of the rejection of this contract which is onerous for to the people of Puerto Rico, “the Bernabe added.
Meanwhile, independent senator José Vargas Vidot has indicated that the investigation is a positive step towards what is wanted. He stated that the fear of remaining in research does not exclude other possibilities and the complexity of the process should not discourage the sacred exercise of scrutiny.
