Casey Nutt, 26, of the U.S. Navy, was released Tuesday from a trauma center and Carlos Portugal, 36, a first-class Corps Hospital, remains at the center of injuries in critical condition, according to a press release issued Wednesday by local and federal authorities.
Both victims were taken from the scene by helicopter, police said.
The incident ended when the gunman was fatally shot by police after brandishing a weapon on the premises, Army Brigade. Said General Michael J. Talley.
Authorities are investigating the reasons and circumstances surrounding the incident, Talley told reporters at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what we know so far:
How the day unfolded
Frederick police chief Jason Lando said the first shooting took place at “a military institution” in Riverside Technology Park.
In a press release, the police department said the building is a warehouse rented by the Naval Medical Research Center, Biological Defense Research Directorate to store research material and equipment.
After the shooting, a victim entered a nearby business, Nicolock Paving Stones, and called for help, a person there said.
“Our team was able to help them and called the authorities,” says a statement released by Jeremy Mutschler, Nicolock’s director of marketing and advertising. The statement emphasizes that the shooting did not take place in Nicolock.
Officials identified this individual as Nutt.
Portugal was found in the warehouse where the initial shooting took place, according to the statement.
The gunman was stopped at the facility gates, but before the vehicle could be searched, the shooter took off.
He was arrested about half a mile from the facility, where he got out of the car, brandished a gun and was shot by police, Talley told reporters.
What a witness said
Garett Wagner, Nicolock Paving Stones ’operations manager, was talking about price changes with a new salesman when Nutt ran in, with his military fatigues covered in blood.
“They shot me. Please help me. There’s an active shooter, he’s still chasing me,” Wagner said.
Wagner said he quickly went into action, telling Nutt to go into the bathroom and close the door. The salesman and another employee closed the front door, he said.
“I can’t tell you if I was scared, scared, or trying to help,” Wagner said. “I do not know.”
Wagner said he had all the employees gathered in the back, telling them to close the door until he came back.
The manager called 911, but another employee had already called.
“You don’t think it’s going to happen here … then it happened, and it happened,” Wagner said. “Did we do the right thing? Did we do it right? I think tan. I do not know.”
The research
Frederick police chief Jason Lando said the gunman was using a rifle but did not provide any additional information about the weapon.
Frederick is about a 50-mile drive northwest of Washington, DC. Woldesenbet had an E-4 rank and did not live in Fort Detrick, officials said.
Agencies that help Frederick police include the FBI; the Office of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Maryland State Police; and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
The FBI is handling the first shooting scene, officials said.
