The pop-off is real in Super Smash Bros.
The Super Smash Bros. champion Melee Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma is known for his excessive celebration after a particularly intense match. Really, is there a more memorable Smash moment than EVO 2016, when Hungrybox was crying on the ground after defeating Adam “Navy” Lindgren?
Well, Hungrybox could have outdone himself this time. Last night, Hungrybox appeared so loud that it ended up fainting for about 10 seconds. It was such a shocking and disturbing moment captured on the webcam that it can become one of the most talked about pop-offs of all time.
Hungrybox shared the moment on Twitter, telling his followers he was going to the doctor to see if he was okay. While the Internet has already had a field day mocking such a meme moment, fainting is no laughing matter.
Hungrybox released a video about the incident concerning the following night. He recounted the intense six-hour stream that climbed to the grand final of Eastcoast Fridays, a weekly online melee tournament with some big names.
“I’m sweaty, I’m tired. But I’m also hyper-focused. I decided I wanted this reward more than anything else in my life at the time,” Hungrybox recalled. “I started playing some of the best online movies I’ve ever had.”
Hungrybox admitted that he often shouts quite loudly when he wins. “That’s what I am,” he said, noting that he wears his heart up his sleeve. But the scream always makes him a little disconcerting.
This time it was a little different, though. His vision and head “came out light.” He said there was a cloud in his head and he got very dizzy, resembling an intense motion sickness. He was stronger than any other time he appeared, which led him to faint for the first time.
“It was a weird experience,” Hungrybox said.
Hungrybox also added that it is totally fine. It was probably a lack of food and hydration rather than a serious illness. It may not be the best decision to appear so excitedly after having aired for more than eight hours. Still, it’s a relief to his fans.
It’s not the first time Hungrybox has encountered a health issue.
Prior to EVO 2018, Hungrybox announced a serious wrist injury on its Twitter. After finishing second to a local, Hungrybox experienced severe pain in his wrist that shot him in the arm.
“First the broken finger, then food poisoning, then the flu, now whatever,” Hungrybox tweeted.
Some of the responses to Hungrybox’s wrist injury are part of the reason the Smash community was seen as toxic for so many years. Many people celebrated God Melee’s health concerns, seemingly satisfied that he would not be able to compete to the fullest of his abilities.
Bullying became mass for Hungrybox at the time. He tweeted that the community has been wrapping up for 12 years. This included being teased by his “teammates, competitors” and even “personal characters in the community” every day.
“Just like it already makes sense,” Hungrybox wondered at the time.
While the Smash community has recently cleaned up its act, it hasn’t stopped people from making fun of Hungrybox for its latest health episode. Many people joked when Hungrybox “showed up with a break,” referring to one of his clutch moves with Jigglypuff. Video remixes are also starting to appear on Twitter.
Joseph “Mang0” Márquez even replied, “What the hell is wrong with you?”
While Hungrybox has welcomed entertainment for now, its fans hope everything is fine for health with the best melee competitor. The Smash community is currently waiting for an update on the Hungrybox Doctor visit.
