In Australia, some people have found news PS5 models that are sold in stores. But don’t get too excited. These new console revisions do not add to larger hard drives or more powerful hardware. Instead, these new revisions seem to make some minor changes, including replacing a single screw.

As reported by the gaming outlet based in Australia Click Start, these new PS5 models were shipped to the country last week. Apparently Click Start considers Australia to be the first country to receive shipments of the new models. These new consoles have a slightly changed model numbering scheme, with CFI-11XX. (The original PS5 launch consoles use CFI-1XXX.) It looks like these console models are almost identical. A small change is a new screw used to attach the PS5 to its bracket. Before, this screw could only be tightened or loosened with a tool. Now the small screw has been changed and you can do everything by hand. What a time to be alive.

Actually, I totally understand this little change. Installing the back of my PS5 had a pain in the ass, between its strange shape and the screw that was tricky to screw. Perhaps this new and improved screw will mean a small improvement in the quality of life.

It also looks like these new models, which come in both digital and disk format, weigh about 10 oz. or 300 gm less than the original PS5 consoles. At the moment there is not much information about what is or is not in these consoles that can explain the weight difference. It’s not just the new screw! Sony has been silent about these changes and has not released much public information about them.

In May, Sony registered a new wireless communication module for use on a new PS5 model. The new module replaces the J20H100 wifi module used in all PS5 launch machines. But until someone with the skills and tools gets one of these new Australian PS5s, we can’t know for sure if this module is there and if that explains the weight difference.

In the meantime, if you’re still looking for a PS5, good luck! Sony expects console shortages to be an issue until next year how the pandemic and the global shortage of chips make it difficult to produce and ship electronic devices for businesses. Don’t worry, you still don’t need a PS5. You have a lot of games on your to-do that you have to finish anyway. And now that you’ve waited almost a year, you’ll get a new screw on the PS5. Look, good things come to those who wait.
