A woman in the U.S. state of Utah died four days after receiving her second dose of the Modern COVID-19 vaccine, local media reported Wednesday.
Kassidi Kurill, a 39-year-old single mother, received the second dose on Feb. 1 and died Feb. 5, local broadcaster 2News reported in a report on the side effects of the vaccines.
While autopsy results are pending, Kurill’s family told the news channel that he had no known health problems or pre-existing conditions.
His condition began to worsen a day after the shooting and he went to a local hospital three days later, according to the report.
“They did a blood test and they immediately came back and said she was very, very sick and her liver wasn’t working,” her father told the news channel.
Kurill was rushed to a trauma center in the city of Murray for a liver transplant, but her condition deteriorated and she died Friday morning, according to the report.
Vaccine side effects are common, but the resulting deaths are rare, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) vaccine adverse event reporting system (VAERS).
As of March 8, more than 92 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered in the U.S. and VAERS received only 1,637 reports of deaths (0.0018%) among people who received a shot.
“To date, VAERS has not detected cause-of-death patterns that indicate a safety issue with COVID-19 vaccines,” the CDC said on its website.
