Saadiq Teague was arrested Friday afternoon, the New York City Police Department said.
Teague was sitting while he was charging the phone at the subway station and had the unloaded AK-47 in front of him, a law enforcement source told CNN who knew the situation directly on condition of anonymity. The teen also had a gas mask with him, the source said.
Police have not said why the teenager had the gun and was carrying the magazine.
New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea tweeted congratulations to routine patrol officers who confiscated the items.
Teague is charged with two counts of criminal possession of a second-degree weapon; criminal possession of a third-degree weapon; and third-degree criminal possession related to an ammunition clip, according to the New York City Police Department.
Teague was also charged with criminal use of second-degree drug paraphernalia, Detective Annette Shelton said.
CNN was unable to identify a Teague lawyer, but contacted the Legal Aid Society to see if he represented him. Teague may not have been assigned a lawyer yet because the arrest is so recent, he told CNN Red Haskins of Legal Aid.
CNN has asked for comments from Teague’s family in Ohio and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
