Tom Brady, Gronk’s joke about retiring in a Super Bowl ad

Gronk and Tom Brady will go face to face: in a peculiarly peculiar announcement of the 2021 Super Bowl.

The two former New England Patriots teammates, who now play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, appeared in a T-Mobile ad that debuted Friday before Sunday’s big game against the Kansas City bosses.

At the commercial, which took place last year, Brady, 43, calls his friend to ask what his next move should be, after two decades in the game and six Super Bowl calls to his fingers.

“I have a word for you: retirement,” he tells Brady, a retiree, Rob Gronkowski, 31, while playing a sunny golf course. “If you retire now, you will walk on soft sand in a week. Retirement is like earning another! Maybe I’ll even join you. ”

Except, that’s not what Brady heard, not thanks to his “poor network,” says a voiceover.

“If you retire now, you’re soft and weak,” the confused cry cries out. “He just came to Florida and won another one.”

“It’s that easy, Gronk,” Brady says after the call. It’s moving fast this year and the rest is history. “I’m taking Gronk with me,” Brady promises at a fake press conference at the end of the ad.

So the two ended up in Tampa. Maybe irregular networks aren’t that bad after all.

Brady-Gronk’s gag is just one of the 2021 Super Bowl commercials before Sunday’s big game, which kicks off at 6:30 pm on CBS. Big football teammate Joe Montana also appeared in a Guinness ad, while John Travolta and his daughter Ella relived Travolta’s “Grease” moves in a now viral Scotts & Miracle Gro ad.
