Compatibility with earlier versions is one of the best features of the Xbox Series X | S. Not only can you play almost every game on every previous Xbox console on the new system, but many also receive visual enhancements that make them look and work better than ever.
One of these graphics enhancements comes in the form of a new “FPS Boost” mode. Microsoft says the parameter “uses a variety of new methods to nearly duplicate (and in some cases quadruple) the original frame in selected titles.” Higher frame rates give a visual look to games softer and can help you feel the game more sensitive.
FPS Boost will be released as part of the upcoming Xbox Series X control panel update S this spring. However, the feature will be added per game using an additional software patch. The first five games that support FPS Boost are:
- Far Cry 4
- New Super Lucky story
- Sniper Elite 4
- UFC 4
- Watch Dogs 2.
Microsoft says more games will support it FPS Boost mode in the coming months. Since Microsoft engineers handle patches instead of making games. original development teams, hopefully there will be more games is added in a constant clip. The company prioritizes titles based on their popularity and availability, and many will be available through Xbox Game Pass.
Once available, you can activate FPS Boost from the games and apps screen. Highlight a game in the library, then press the Options button to manage the software. Select “Compatibility menu” and turn on “FPS Boost” if available. Other compatibility improvements with previous versions such as Auto-HDR will also be moved to this menu. You can check if FPS Boost is activated while in the game by pressing the Xbox button to open the overlay.

Increasing the frame rate in FPS Boost mode varies between games and consoles. For example, UFC 4 runs at 60 fps in the series with FPS Boost enabled, while New Super Lucky’s Tale runs at 120 fps in both the S and X series. These are the only specific examples Microsoft provided in its ad.
Of course, you’ll also need a TV or monitor that can show the improved frame rate. 120 Hz screens are not uncommon, but many TVs continue to limit 90 or 60 Hz. However, as long as the original framerate of the game is lower than yours TV, FPS Boost should simplify the game even if you can’t see the full effect.
