Wednesday marked the return of one of the most bizarre reality competitions to be successful on American television, and that’s saying a lot. The masked singer season five started with guest host Niecy Nash spoke for COVID positive Nick Cannon, a rooster that keeps secrets that hides clues from judges and a harvest of masked new crooners.
If you’re not familiar with the premise of the Fox series, it’s basically a singing competition where celebrities (or “celebrities”) sing elaborate karaoke routines while judges Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke make video track packages to get clues as to who may be under the masks.
Wednesday’s premiere featured performances by five of the season’s ten contestants: Raccoon, Snail, Seashell, Russian Doll and Robpine (it’s a robot porcupine, in case it wasn’t clear). The assumptions of who was under the masks on Wednesday ranged from Jamie Foxx to Jessica Simpson to Ginuwine. But only the singer with the lowest number of votes from judges and the public at home (in this case, a limited number of people who allegedly watched live channels when the show was recorded weeks ago, shall we?) Is revealed at the end of the episode and this week was ….

Caragol. Judges ‘assumptions for who performed Hall & Oats’ “Make My Dreams” with a touch of country included included Adam Carolla, Billy Crystal, and Jay Leno. But when the top hat was removed from the screw, no celebrity head was seen. Instead, it was Kermit the frog that came out of the shell of the snail. Yes, it is true. While the judges guessed real-life humans as bushes, he was a Muppet all the time. Or at least puppeteer Matt Vogel.

According to the costumes, it’s clear that there are real humans behind some of this season’s voices, but it’s still unclear if the Russian doll is one person, two people, a whole family of people? Or, if there was any indication tonight, maybe it’s just Keebler’s elf tree.
