The highlight of this week’s economic data will be the January-Friday job report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists ’consensus estimate is 100,000 new non-farm payrolls after a 140,000 decline in December. The unemployment rate is expected to remain constant at 6.7%.
Other data released this week includes the Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index from Monday to January and its service equivalent on Wednesday. The Census Bureau also reported construction spending data for December on Monday, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported non-farm business productivity and unit labor costs for the fourth quarter on Thursday.

The Supply Institute Management publishes its index of manufacturing purchasing managers for January. Economists predict a reading of 60, roughly even in December. An PMI above 50 indicates an expansion of the manufacturing sector.
The Census Bureau reports on construction spending data for December. The consensus forecast is a 0.7% month-on-month increase in construction spending to a seasonal annual rate of $ 1.47 trillion.

The Labor Office Statistics indicate non-agricultural business productivity and fourth-quarter unit labor costs. Economists predict that productivity declined at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.9%, after jumping 4.6% in the third quarter. Unit labor costs are expected to rise 3.4%, after falling 6.6%.

The BLS releases the January employment report. The consensus estimate is that non-farm payrolls will increase by 100,000, reversing the December 140,000 drop. The unemployment rate is expected to remain unchanged at 6.7%.
The Federal Reserve reports December consumer credit data. Total outstanding consumer debt is expected to increase by $ 12 billion, to a total of $ 4.18 trillion. This would bring outstanding consumer credit to the same level it started in 2020. The last time debt fell in a year was in 2009.
