Picture-in-picture (or PiP) is a feature that iPhones have had since iOS 13 and iPads since iOS 9. YouTube, being YouTube, comes into vogue late at the PiP party; that announced in June which would bring the feature to Apple devices for both Premium subscribers and regular users, and had just started deploying the feature to Apple devices. Of course, there is a problem.

PiP is currently an exclusive feature of Premium

Now, I know not more said the company will offer PiP to all users, but at the moment, Premium subscribers are the only ones who have access to the feature on iOS and iPadOS. While this seems a bit of a betrayal, rest assured that the feature is on the way to everyone. YouTube just didn’t offer a timeline for when.

That being said, it’s not that YouTube is just adding this feature to Premium subscriber apps. In fact, you won’t find any PiP options in the YouTube app. Go ahead, check; is not here. No, it looks like YouTube is testing PiP on iOS before launching it completely, which allows its Premium subscribers to try it out first, but only if they know where to look.

How to activate Youtube PiP for iPhone

Because PiP on your iPhone and iPad is currently an “experimental” feature, you need to activate it from the “New” YouTube page, which is where they save the list of “running” features you can try. as a Premium subscriber. To get started, go to YouTube.com/new, make sure you’re signed in to the appropriate YouTube Premium Google Account. Locate the file Picture in picture in iOS option and choose “TRY IT” to be confirmed.

Although YouTube does not specifically mention the iPad in this option, you may be able to make it work on your iPad. according to 9to5Google. You may need to remove the application and reinstall it to change the feature.

When you open the YouTube app with your Premium account, PiP should be active. All you have to do is start a video and then swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or press the Start button) and the video will follow you as a PiP window. You can resize, move, and minimize it on the side of the screen, just as you can with other PiP windows on iOS.

Interestingly, this feature has an expiration date of October 31st. This may be the date YouTube expects to spread this feature to all users, not just Premium subscribers, but it is not clear at this time. For now, make sure you enjoy PiP while you can.

Current iis presented with PiP from YouTube

YouTube says that if you lock your device while watching PiP, the video will pause. You can start playback again using the media controls on the lock screen.

As mentioned above, if your YouTube PiP doesn’t work at all with either an iPhone or an iPad, you may need to remove and reinstall the app. Make sure you’re signed in with the correct Google Account.

See PiP without Premium account

YouTube will deploy PiP to all users, but why wait? You can avoid these restrictions right now if you don’t have a Premium account:you simply won’t do it through the YouTube app. See ours full guide here for more information.
