Spotify has a new voice assistant in its Android and iOS apps. Call “Hey Spotify” on your device and you’ll be able to control all aspects of the Spotify app hands-free, useful for driving or cleaning the house. The first group of users in the United States should have access to the feature now and the company says it will launch more devices in the coming weeks.

While you can control Spotify with your voice via Android Audio and the Google Assistant on Android, and to a limited extent via Siri and CarPlay on Apple devices, “Hey Spotify” interacts directly with the Spotify app . This means you can use voice controls without having to train the device’s digital wizard to recognize specific Spotify commands.

Once “Hey Spotify” is available on your device, you’ll need to turn on voice controls in the app to use:

  1. Open the Spotify app.
  1. Go to “Search” card.
  2. Tap the microphone icon next to the search bar.
  3. Select “Enable Spotify.”
  4. Give Spotify permission to record audio.

You can now use Spotify integrated voice controls. Just say “Hey Spotify,” followed by a command. Ask them to play a specific artist or playlist you created, pause, or skip tracks, or upload the last episode of a podcast. You can also search by voice without having to change a special voice mode first.

If you want to turn off the feature, go to Go to Settings> Voice Interactions and off “Hey Spotify.” This will prevent accidental activations and is smart for personal privacy if you have never used the feature after activating it.

Like other voice apps, Spotify will listen in the background for you to say “Hey Spotify.” Spotify says the app only listens in short bursts that are deleted immediately. If you recognize a command, the app notifications and audio sounds are played to let you know that the app is currently recording to you. Recording is required for the application to process your commands, but you can read them Spotify voice data privacy policy if you want to know more about how voice audio is managed.
