If you’ve ever received a very long voice message on WhatsApp that you want to be able to go a little faster, apparently WhatsApp listened to you.

According to reports, the app is testing different playback speeds on iOS and Android WABetaInfo. The outlet saw the feature in a new update to Apple’s TestFlight beta program and the Google Play beta program in recent days. According to WABetaInfo, there will be three playback speeds available on iOS and Android: 1.0x, 1.5x and 2.0x. The feature is currently under development and is not available to the general public.

In its report on the Android version, the media stated that users could change the playback speed of a voice message by tapping the speed tag. Below you can see screenshots of what the supposed function would look like.

As with other developments, it is not clear that this will ever reach the mainstream. There is no set release date.

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I find it hard enough to hear the long voice messages from my friends as they are. Often some friends who love voice messages send me four-, five-, and even 15-minute messages. When I finish listening, it’s sometimes hard to remember the multiple topics they’ve mentioned. FYI, a good trick is to reply via text on WhatsApp while listening so as not to forget all the details of the voice message.

That’s not to say it judges people who send long voice messages. I can’t, because I do too. In fact, sometimes I joke with my best friends (who are the only ones on this Earth who are willing to listen to a 12-minute voice message) that I don’t send them voice messages, I send them podcasts. For those who will inevitably ask why I don’t just call my friends, it’s a time zone issue.

So what do I think when I see WhatsApp’s idea of new playback speeds? I mean, I won’t say it’s a bad idea. Surely there will be some people who find it useful if it is ever released. But if I get lost while listening to long voice messages at a normal playback speed, I can’t even imagine what it will be like if I increase that speed. And, well, I’m not sure if I would laugh or bother if my friends increased the playback speed of my messages (although I wouldn’t blame them, my messages are too long).

Unfortunately, each has its own speed of reproduction.
